Transfer Domain Name
Transferring domain name providers
Domain names can be transferred from one provider to another through a basic process. What a domain name transfer does exactly is change the entity that is in control of the domain name records. People might choose to make this change for various reasons, including having all domain names located in one place, or taking advantage of cheaper renewal and registration fees. Generally, the new provider will have a process defined on its website, but it usually involves the new provider needing to contact and confirm the domain name transfer with the old provider.
To complete the transfer, the domain owner will need to recover the EPP Code/Auth Key that was provided when the domain was registered. If needed, the code for a .au domain can be recovered through the auDA website. The code will be emailed to the address of the domain owner.
To note, if you are transferring both a domain name and hosting account to a new provider, it is important to update the nameservers BEFORE transferring the account. There is usually about a 4 or 5 day lock period after making a transfer where you are unable to make any changes to an account. What this means is that your website and email could be down for those 5 days since the nameservers will not be pointing to the proper location.
Transferring Ownership
Sometimes, it may be necessary to change the ownership of a domain name. This might occur if you are selling a business, or even just changing the business name. In either case, the transfer process of a .AU domain will result in a new two-year registration period from the time the domain change takes effect. Normally, there is a fee involved with this process that varies from provider to provider, and it can usually take about a week to complete. There is a form that will need to be filled out stating that you fully understand that you are selecting a new registrant, or are the new registrant for a domain. It is important to note that .au domain names cannot be sold freely, therefore transferring domain ownership can only occur for these extensions in the above cases (e.g. selling business or changing business name).
