Most Ideal
No concrete rules stand in place when trying to choose the most ideal domain name, but there are some basic guidelines to help in the process.
Characters
A good rule to follow is to not make the domain name too long. Sixty-three characters is the max length, but when you think about typing in a domain name that long, it would just take too much time for most web users to even bother. A good goal is to keep it short, yet descriptive enough for the web user to remember, perhaps under 20 characters.
Spelling
Keep in mind the possibility for certain words in your domain name to be misspelled. Try to keep the process of finding your website the easiest it can be so that you are sure to not lose any visitors along the way.
Keywords
Placing keywords in the domain name can help with Search Engine Optimisation, as well as help with quickly and easily presenting a site's focus to the visitor.
Extensions
Choose an extension that is related to your website. Certain extensions are dedicated to websites with certain purposes, such a .gov for government websites, and .edu for educational institutions.
