Domain Registration
auDA
Before going further into the registration process, it is important to learn a bit about the auDA. The auDA , or .au Domain Administration Ltd, is the policy authority and industry self-regulatory body for the .au domain space. They set forth all rules and policies for the .au domain and registration of .au domain names presented on this page and website.
How do I register a domain name?
In order to register a .au domain name, the first step is to find an accredited .au domain name provider. A comprehensive list of providers can be found on the auDA website.
Before you do anything further, you will need to know the policy rules for acquiring a .com.au domain name. The main requirement is that you have to be a registered business in Australia, an Australian partnership or foreigner licensed to trade in Australia. These domain names are also available to people who have registered or applied for an Australian trademark, have an incorporated Australian association or commercial statutory bodies.
In addition to these specifications for acquisition, the domain name itself should be a clear indication (match, abbreviation, acronym or other acceptable connection) of your business name, be anywhere from 2 to 63 characters long, and contain only numbers, letters and hyphens. For more information on other extension policies, please see the auDA website.
Once you find a provider, the registration process will vary. Generally, there is an online order form to complete, along with a fee anywhere from $20 - $140 for registration.
How long does it take to register a domain?
On average, the registration process and update of records takes about 24 hours to complete, but it should be noted that this timeframe varies from company to company.
