What is a domain name?
Simply put, a domain name is what displays in the address bar for a website (e.g. www.audomainname.com.au).
More specifically, a domain name can be any set of numbers and letters, up to 63 characters, that refers to one or more IP addresses on the internet. Domain names play a large part in marketing and online branding for businesses and individuals in the virtual market, as well as make it easy for web users to identify, and navigate to, certain areas of the internet.
The Domain Name System (DNS) takes these eye-friendly domain names and dials the IP address associated with it in order to pull up the proper information being navigated towards. Without the DNS, web users would be responsible for "dialing" the IP address numbers, which look something like 208.77.188.166, to access a website. As you can tell, this method would make web browsing much less user friendly.
