Au Domains

When choosing a domain name, the extension plays a large part depending on what you are marketing and who you are marketing to. An Australian company will definitely want to use a .au domain name if they are only planning to market to the Australian people. Similarly, companies working in the UK or marketing towards the UK, will want to keep an extension of .uk in their domain name choice.

What comes before these country specific extensions are the top level domains, and each of them has a reason for being used depending on the focus of the website. There are actually both open and closed domain name extensions to choose from, and in this case we will focus on those with a .au extension:

OPEN:

• .com.au - For any business or entity.
• .org.au - For charities and non-profit organisations.
• .net.au - For businesses generally in the technology field.
• .asn.au - This extension is intended for associations, such as political parties, sporting clubs, and other incorporated groups.

CLOSED

• .edu - For use by educational entities registered at federal & state levels.
• .gov - For use by government entities at local, state, and federal levels.
